For $10 million, I would not leave it sitting in one undefined cash position. I would have Schwab document exactly where every dollar will be held, how much receives FDIC coverage, what is covered by SIPC, and what remains uninsured. A carefully structured combination of multiple insured banks, brokered CDs, short-term Treasury securities and separate ownership categories can provide far more protection than one large cash balance.

If the money is invested in fully paid securities—such as Treasury bills, stocks, bonds or money-market fund shares—those assets are generally segregated from Schwab’s own property and should remain yours if the brokerage fails. However, SIPC does not protect against investment losses.

If it remains uninvested cash, the protection depends on Schwab’s selected cash feature. A bank sweep may spread it among several FDIC-insured program banks, but coverage is normally limited to $250,000 per bank, per ownership category. SIPC protection for brokerage cash is also limited.

A Schwab brokerage account can be a strong place to custody substantial assets, but simply depositing $10 million there does not mean all $10 million is federally insured.

Hey Admin - wondering if you knew the answer to this - if I held my funds in a brokerage account like Schwab - would they be protected? Let's say I deposit 10 million dollars into brokerage account - would they be safe there?
